When denying his Armenian origin Georgian president denies his grandfather – newspaper

TBILISI. - When denying his Armenian origin, Georgia’s president Michael Saakashvili first of all denies his grandfather. The GeorgianAsavali-Dasavali paper writes about this in the article dedicated to the president’s origin.
At first the paper presents the most important part of Saakashvili’s interview given to the Georgian TV- Imedi channel, in which Georgia’s president denies his Armenian origin.
“How can we believe Saakashvili, when his grandfather Michael Saakov who is praised and well-remembered in Tbilisi never denied being Armenian and only after he became rector he changed his last-name?”  the newspaper writes.
According to the paper, when denying his Armenian origins, Saakashvili first of all denies his grandfather and his own father.
“I have told that for me Armenia is a great nation with a most important culture, and it would be an honor for me if I were Armenian, but I am not. During a different TV show a former soviet citizen also said that Saakashvili is Armenian. My mother called and said ‘How much they talked and why did nobody say that you are not Armenian.’ We are mixture of all ethnic groups, a country with great civilization,” Saakashvili stressed during the interview with Imedi.
