Azerbaijani FM voiced groundless accusations against Armenia

December 07, 2011 | 12:49
VILNIUS.- Azerbaijan is ready to necessary compromise on the basis of international law within the self-government, Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mammadyarov said on Wednesday addressing the OSCE Ministerial Council.
Stating Azerbaijan’s important role in terms of building the future of the region, Mammadyarov recalled many projects linking his country to Europe, and the need to consider security of Azerbaijan in the context of European security. Voicing a small blackmail, Minister pointed out “great threat” in the form of the Karabakh conflict.
“Peace talks are at a very critical stage. Maintaining the status quo is posing threat to security in the region,” he said. Then Foreign Minister accused Armenia of not accepting the reviewed Madrid Principles adding that further progress in the negotiations will depend on Armenia’s willingness to change the status quo.
Then, Mammadyarov traditionally reminded of about one million refugees and 20% of the “occupied territory” being silent about half a million Armenian refugees, and Armenian occupied areas.
He stressed the need to restore confidence. According to him, an important step in this direction could be “direct contacts between Armenian and Azerbaijani communities of Nagorno-Karabakh,” establishment of personal contacts between people.
Azerbaijani FM also accused Armenia of increasing the military budget and modestly refrained from speaking about Azerbaijani military budget which is larger than the entire budget of Armenia.
Official Baku is insisting on the return of protectorate over Nagorno-Karabakh, and is offering to implement fundamental right of peoples to self-determination within territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, thereby pushing the initially unacceptable conditions for the Armenian side and actually breaking the negotiation process for the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict .
